Legal Status and Funding

Founded in 2002, Gurtong Trust - Peace & Media Project is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental, community-based network.

At the beginning of the project, Gurtong was funded wholly by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and was enjoying legal and practical support from the London-based Africa Educational Trust (AET). Two other supporters named below also joined later.

While the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has continued the funding of administration and upgrading of the website, the Government of Noway, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA), began in 2008 to fund Gurtong radio program production. The radio program is also supported by a grant awarded through the Open Society Institute of East Africa (OSIEA) through by the Greater Open Society  Network Media Program in 2009 - 2010.

Gurtong is now registered in Kenya as a Charitable Trust. It is also registered in South Sudan as Peace & Media Project, an NGO. The full name is therefore Gurtong Trust - Peace and media Project, often shorten to just Gurtong.
