Abyei, 25 March 2015 [Gurtong]- Chol Deng Alak arrived in Abyei on Tuesday to meet with other Dinka Ngok delegates to consult about challenges that are facing the region and see a way forward to counter them.

With calls of rampant insecurity and lack of enough teachers in the area, the new Administrator has a tough task ahead to accomplish and see to it that strategies are put in place to ensure that the people of Abyei are content with service delivery.

Gurtong sought the views of the residents of Abyei on the newly appointed Administrator.
Agany Chier, a resident of Abyei hopes the level of insecurity in Abyei will significantly come down.

“We women today welcome the newly appointed head administrator. People are happy about his coming. And we are happy indeed because we hope our previous situations will change in terms of insecurity in the region.”

She was also optimistic that the education and health sector will improve.

Another resident, Anger Ngor, said that Chol Deng Alak is not new in the area and has vast experience on Abyei. She hopes that with him being familiar with the place he will be able to deliver services to the people.

The region of Abyei currently sits at the centre of a conflict between the north and south.
The disputed area is claimed by the Messeriya as well as Ngok Dinka communities who have coexisted in the region for a long time and shared the grazing resources
Insecurity has changed the trajectory of the Abyei conflict from a negotiation over shared rights to a zero sum game.
