President Kiir Opens Parliament, Vows To Make South Sudan Peaceful

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday during the opening session of the National Legislative Assembly in Juba promised to make South Sudan a peaceful country and urged his rivals to put down their arms and negotiate for peace in good faith.

JUBA 21 April 2015 [Gurtong]- President Kiir called upon all South Sudanese to put aside their internal difference and come together as one nation to save the country.

“This country has taken millions of lives from us during the decade of struggle. In this regards, my special appeal goes to our brothers and sisters in the rebellion to put South Sudan first and to be able to negotiate in good faith in order to reach peace agreement”.

President Kiir said that the conflict in South Sudan is internal and should therefore be resolved internally as well.

He called for commitment to cease fires in order to create a peaceful and amicable environment for the negotiations to succeed, saying, “this will also allow safe access to humanitarian assistance to our affected citizens in the country.”

Kiir also appealed to all security organs to protect the citizens irrespective of their political affiliations.

“I ask all the security organs in the country to provide maximum security and good leadership always in protecting the lives of our citizens equally regardless of their political affiliations and backgrounds” he said.

“As the impact of the crisis was very severe and left us with many problems including food shortages. I therefore ask our citizen to embark on Agriculture seriously starting from this season as the only answer to the challenges of food insecurity in the country” President Kiir added.

He acknowledged the role of the International Community, IGAD and TROIKA in the peace process.

“I commend the efforts of our international partners especially TROIKA for the tremendous support and funding of our peace talk since the beginning of 2014”.

He appealed to the international community particularly the United States of America to continue to strengthen the African regional mechanisms and efforts in resolving and ending the current crisis in South Sudan.
