Joseph Deng Nguach was detained in Aweil Central Police for allegedly failing to pay a debt he owed a colleague.

Dut Dut Thalang, a senior government official of Lol State who was present during the incident narrated to Gurtong what happened.

“As he was coming from Lol State where his duty station is, someone had been tracking his movement until he reached his home on Thursday evening. On Friday early morning, Police came to his house with a warrant of arrest demanding him to follow them. While he tried to explain to the police that he is an MP and that he has immunity for arrest unless through channeled communication, but they insisted.”

“He had to follow them and eventually got detained. There was no other alternative but to contact United Nations Mission in South Sudan [UNMISS] whereby they intervened until he was released on bail.” He added.

According to the police report, Joseph has a debt worth 12, 000 SSP that he has failed to pay.
He acknowledged that he was indeed aware of the matter.

“Yes, this gentleman called Harun gave me some money to go and buy for him some sorghum in Raja. I went and bought it and sent the bags of back to him, without knowing that the sorghum didn’t reach him. He was supposed to have followed up with me if he knew that the things didn’t reach him. Why did he opt to arrest me without finding out from me if I had the thing or not?” He said.

Nguach accused Harun of being used to unlawfully arrest him without any legal procedures.

“I guess my arrest is a social and civil case matter, this is a political motivated arrest. There are people I suspect to be behind this arrest and will find out.” He said.
