LOL STATE, 08 June 2016 [Gurtong]- Tribal and communal leaders from the Sudanese border tribe the Rezeigat and South Sudan’s greater Aweil tribe of Dinka Malual have begun a pre-migration peace and border conference in Aweil West County of Lol State.

The two-day consultative and pre-migration conference began on Tuesday in the county headquarters, Nyamlel.

Community leaders from both sides showed gratitude and willingness to commit and engage their respective communities in the 2016 peace conference.

The conference was held at Gok Machar earlier in January this year to iron out few issues related to killings, cattle theft and restrictions of movement for both goods and people along the border.

Though there were few reported incidents of killings and cattle theft during the summer this year, the representatives from both sides say this particular meeting is meant to improve further on how best they will address unforeseen obstacles when they arise.

Each year, leaders of the two communities discuss and settle grievances, over grazing land and border trade.

“There were no many cases compared to last year but still there were many killings last year, but this year there were not as many problems as last year and that’s why we’re here to brainstorm and see how best we can improve and develop further” said Guomjuer Garang, a Dinka Malual Chief and representative during the conference.

Whereas Mohamed Billal, a leader from the Rezeigat tribe, emphasized on how best the relationship between the two tribes has been for the last few years. He appreciated communities of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State for allowing the Rezeigat to graze in their areas.

The conference was facilitated and financed by an American chartered organization, VISTAS International.
Regional Program Development Coordinator for VISTAS in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State Santino Bol Ajith said there has been a decrease in the number of deaths between the two sides, but an increase in the number of cattle raids.

“A lot of cattle theft has occurred because of hunger in South Sudan, and particularly Northern Bar El-Ghazal, but the Rezeigat have resolved not to declare war against the culprits, but decided to bring it forward to the paramount chiefs of Dinka Malual and local authorities." Bol said.
