RUMBEK, 09 June 2016 [Gurtong]-Three people were on Wednesday killed in Rumbek by unknown people.

Those killed include one policeman and 2 civilians.

The Chief Inspector of Police in Rumbek Central County, Colonel Manesseh Keluel Cindut said the killings are part of the continuous revenge killings in the State.

“Our people are being killed in revenge attacks. It was just 3 days ago when 2 prison warders with ranks were killed by unknown gunmen and today it has happened again” said the Chief Inspector of Police.

Keluel urged members of the organized forces to be on high alert and combat any kind of insecurity in the area.

“It is our constitutionally duty to protect the live and properties of the civilians and we will continue doing our duty while taking care of ourselves.”

Moses Ater, an activist in Rumbek said that police in Rumbek are operating under fear due to existence of unauthorized arms in the hands of pastoralists’ youth in the State.
He also noted that the cycle of revenge killings have continued to rise because murder cases are not being settled in court.

Ater called upon the State government to disarm the civil population.

“The only solution to stop revenge killings and to seal unknown gunmen in Rumbek is only to disarm those people carrying guns without government authorization.  The government should urgently set courts to settle all murder cases pending in the court without trial” said Ater.

The Local Government Minister, Benjamin Maker Mabor, said that the CID and security agents in the State must apprehend those involved in the killings of the police and the two civilians.

“We have instructed our security agents, CID and public to provide information related to the death of Sergeant Mangui Maker alongside two civilians killed in PDU on Wednesday. Any information related to this incident will be given priority.”
