WAU- November 21, 2016 [Gurtong] -
The Archbishop announced his retirement during a church service at Saint Matthew’s Cathedral in Khartoum on Sunday.

Cardinal Zubeir Wako, previously the Bishop of Wau in South Sudan, became Archbishop of Khartoum on the 10th of October 1981 making his term in office as the Archdiocese of Khartoum for 35-years.

In the Canon Commandment of the Catholic Church, a diocesan bishop retires from the administration of the diocese when he reaches the age of 75.

“The time has come for me to officially retire. After this mass only when I have the desire to celebrate mass with you, I would do it; but it is not going to be the program of life as before,” he told the congregation.

The new Archbishop of Khartoum now is Michael Didi, the former Bishop of El-Obeied. He will be installed as Archbishop on the 9th of December.

Wako who is from Wau State in South Sudan was born on 27 February 1941 in Mboro village in Wau County and was ordained a priest on 21 July 1963.

He was appointed Bishop of Wau in 1974, and was proclaimed a Cardinal-Priest of Sant Atanasio via Tiburtina by Pope John Paul II on 21 October 2003. He was one of the cardinal electors who participated in the 2005 papal conclave that selected Pope Benedict XVI.

Cardinal Zubeir Wako escaped an assassination attempt by a member of the predominantly Muslim Messirya tribe when celebrating Sunday Mass on 10 October 2010.
