NBG Appeals To Swiss Agency For Development To Extend WASH Program

The governments of Aweil, Lol and Aweil East States have appealed to the Swiss Agency for Development (SDC) to extend their WASH program in the rural Counties in the States.

This comes after the Agency’s 5 year project that is worth 20 million USD is about to come to an end in a couple of months.

The Switzerland Embassy to South Sudan began its water project in the region in 2010. On Wednesday, the Swiss Agency for Development updated the three governments about their achievements.

According to the Head of the Project in Aweil, the project comes to an end in March 2017.

Evelyn Arnold during a meeting with representatives of the three States on Wednesday said much of the project activities for targeted areas have come to an end and the remaining ones will be speedily covered by the end of the remaining months.

The Acting Governor, Simon Uber Mawut appreciated the agency adding that their work has benefitted communities in the three States.

“The provision of water to rural places in the former Northern Bahr el Ghazal has significantly reduced fights at water points.Your services are good because our population needs water in rural areas but when we listen to the presentation on achievements and Places they were implemented in Aweil South, East, North and West County and Aweil Centre was left out. Again the remaining areas for the projects implementation which will be complete in March should consider Aweil West, North and East” he said.

Lol State representative, Hon. Wol Mawien said the purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the Swiss Agency for Development in the course of its work in the region. He appreciated the Switzerland government and for building capacities of the people of Aweil in addition to provision of water in the region.

Meanwhile, the Director of Cooperation of SDC, Philippe Besson said the agency will now turn to focus on food security in the region as their next project.

“The SDC after the 2016 water project in Aweil has designed a new strategy for 2017 -2020 as it will  deal with Food Security and Livelihood, access to basic services and human Security and Protection among others” he said.

Besson said the achievements for 2010-2016 includes; capacity building, which equipped beneficiaries to form Water Management Committees, drilling of boreholes, provision of solar power in the Ministry of Water Cooperative and other Counties, rehabilitation of water points, and funding of community based organizations-CBOs to participate in community service delivery.
