WAU, 03 January 2018 [Gurtong] –
Last year the students protested at the South Sudan embassy in Harare demanding the government to clear off their school fees following threats to be discontinued from studying by universities in Harare.

“The government is committed to pay out their tuition fees and living expenses,” said Lam during an interview with Gurtong on Wednesday.

“We as a ministry we are worried over the delay in payment process. The Finance ministry is currently in the process of delivering the money to the students in Zimbabwe and they have to be patient as the government is working on clearing their fees,” he said.

He also disclosed that the government last year paid a sum of 5,000 US Dollars as the first instalment payment.

“In my last year visit to Zimbabwe in June, we paid $5,000 as the first instalment. Also the cabinet ministers had directed the Ministry of Finance to release the money after the passing of the budget.

However, there were delays in the passing of the budget as it was passed in October instead.
“The Ministry of Higher Education also wrote a letter to the Finance Ministry in August to release the money, but it seemed there was a problem of hard currency, “he added.

Yien urged the Ministry of Finance to expedite the release of the money.

“We are closely following up all grievances facing our students in Harare and hoping to address the matter as soon as possible,” added the Minister of Higher Education.
