JUBA, 05 January 2017 [Gurtong]-
“At about 10:30 pm last night, bandits under direct command of Lt. Col. Chan Garang attacked SPLA’s position at Kafuri. The attackers were repulsed and SPLA is in hot pursuit of them,” Brigadier General Lul ruai Koang said.

He said the bandits are fleeing westward towards Wondurba about 80 miles west of Juba.
“By 7 am, SPLA soldiers pursuing the bandits indicated that they had killed several of them. One soldier was shot and wounded on our side,” he told reporters on Friday.

Residents of Gurei residential area of Juba said they could not sleep during the night of the incident after gun shots rocked the area.

The gunshots which begun at around 11 PM Thursday night continued until around 6 AM.
According to one resident of Gurei, after 10 minutes of serious gunshots, it stopped and the sounds of army vehicles moving towards the direction of the area were heard about 10 minutes later. Sporadic shooting continued west of Gurei till about 6 AM Friday morning.

Sounds of firearms including AK47, PKM, and light machine guns were heard.

In November 2017, Garang an ally of former army Chief Paul Malong defected with about 200 soldiers to join Dr. Riek Machar.

Lul ruled out that the attackers could have links with Paul Malong Awan, saying Garang had defected from the army after being accused of being involved in criminal activities when he was based in Torit.

“He was involved in criminal activities in the past and he was summoned to Juba to explain commandeering vehicles belonging to civilians in Torit,” Lul said.

“When he was summoned to Juba, he decided to flee and he went and declared that he had rebelled against the government of South Sudan, and declared he is loyal to Dr. Riek Machar,” he added.

“Last night he had a few criminals with him, they attacked our position in Kafuri. Before they could do that they had abducted an SPLA soldier and ordered him to show them where the SPLA was deployed,” Lul revealed.

The army spokesman said people should remain calm as the situation is being handled by the army and will not pose any danger.

“There is no reason for our people to be worried; security forces have been dispersed to the area to beef up the security.” he said. “We are doing mob up operations around that area. We are doing searches in those bushes to ensure that any criminal is no longer hiding in that area,” he added.
