Nasir FC Beats Mahdad FC 2-1 In Peace Cup Tournament

Nasir FC beat Mahad Fc 2 goals to 1 on Saturday in the final peace cup tournament organized by United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in collaboration with the State Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports in Yei.

YEI, 05 March 2018 [Gurtong]-In a densely attended match at the Yei freedom square, Nasir FC scored the first goal in the early first half leading to high pressure in which Mahad FC equalized at the near end of the first half hour.

In the Second half, both teams mounted pressure on each other. However, Nasir FC scored a goal at the late 80 minutes in the second half resulting to their victory.

John James the President of Yei Local Football Association during his opening remarks before the match said the overall goal of the match was aimed at promoting peace, unity and reconciliation among the youth.

“I want to thank all the players for portraying peaceful play, I also need to thank UNMISS for supporting such peace initiatives in Yei. My appeal to UNMISS is that led this programs continue so that youth are brought together through sports” he noted.

Meanwhile Yei River State Information and Sports Ministers, Alfred Kennedy Duku thanked UNMISS and said it’s high time to embrace peace through sports.

Alfred said engaging the youth in sporting activities will lessen bad practices such as committing crimes and violence among the young people.

He appealed to UNMISS and other partners to continue supporting other sports programs not only football but also on boxing and other cultural sports activities in the whole State.
Chief Francis Ogukwa, head of UNHCR who spoke on behalf of UNMISS base in Yei said time to start peace and reconciliation is now.

“If you go to other countries like my home country Nigeria that experienced similar problems in the past like what South Sudan is facing now, youth who went violent were turned to be peace makers through sports because with sports it shows love, unity, reconciliation and positive and productive thinking” he added.

Francis said the youth are instruments for peace making saying UNMISS and other partners will continue to supporting sports activities in all the thirteen Counties of the State.
He is calling on the government to ensure that there is total peace and stability in all the rural Counties so that similar sports events can be rolled out to other youth groups in the villages of the State.

For his part, Yei River State Governor, Emmanuel Adil Anthony congratulated the two competing teams for having displayed efforts for peace and reconciliation through sports.

Adil said his government will empower youth and women through sports. He added that his administration is working hard to stabilize security so as to promote peace, unity and social cohesion.

“My Government will make Yei great again; I want to say here that with partners, we will struggle to construct a stadium to promote unity and peace sports.

As a gesture for appreciation, Adil gave the wining team (Nasir FC) 40, 000 SSP, Mahad FC 20,000 SSP, 20,000 SSP to the referees and 20,000 SSP to the Yei local football association in a bid to continue promoting football for unity and sports.
