-In a presidential decree read on South Sudan broadcasting Corporation Radio on Wednesday, Gen Riak replaces late Gen. James Ajongo Mawut who died in Egypt in April. The decree was effective on May 2.

Gen Riak who hails from Jonglei State was the deputy army chief for operations and acting army chief.

General Gabriel Jok Riak returned from Nairobi on Tuesday after spending nearly a week receiving medication.  He was flown to Nairobi last week after suffering from a short illness in Juba during the mourning of his late boss, General James Ajongo Mawut.

“I am now okay. I will be in Bilpham tomorrow to resume my duties,” said General Jok adding that members of the public should not worry about his health,” gen Riak told journalists on Tuesday upon arrival at Juba International Airport.

During Ajongo’s mourning, general Riak vowed to continue implementing policies that have been left hanging following the demise of the late General James Ajongo.

“We promise to keep his vision and legacy alive,” General Riak said.  May his passing give us more strength and courage to carry on his legacy of transforming the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA),” he said.
