Wau State Government Disagrees With UN Agencies New Plan Over Returnees Food Support

Wau State government has rejected a UN initiative aiming at only offering just a three months food ration assistance to the Internally Displace Person who are voluntarily returning to their homes from the protection of civilians sites within Wau town.

WAU 14, December 2018 [Gurtong] -
According to Wau State Deputy Governor, Zackaria Joseph Garang, the State government and UN agencies had in the past agreed to offer food assistance to the returnees for a period of one year and the food would be distributed to the vulnerable people within their home areas
in the town.

Garang told reporters today tht after a meeting with the UN State Coordinator and other UN agencies, the State government was surprised by the new UN plan.
Garang said the new plan would not encourage the people living at the UN protection sites to return to their homes since they lost all of their properties during the conflict.

“This will not help the government and the IDPs who are returning to their homes to live a good life. For sure this plan is different from the plan of the government,” he said.

“Clearly those who are at the UN Protection of Civilians Sites in Wau, when they entered there, the number was 39,000. Now the current number there is 16,700, that was the latest report we received,” he added.

“We are calling upon the organization to review its new plan and accept our plan which is helpful for us because the government and UNMISS has been supporting the voluntary return of people to their residential areas,” he said.

Since the conflict erupted in Wau town in 2015 to 2018, thousands of civilians took refuge at the UN compound while others sheltered at churches and open spaces within Wau town.
