Kiir Accuses Commanders Of Theft and Poor Health Of Soldiers

South Sudan President Salva Kiir yesterday blamed the army’s commanders for the poor health of soldiers across the country.

JUBA, January 25, 2019 [Gurtong] - He said the Army Chief of Defense Forces, General Gabriel Jok Riak and his Division Commanders were not caring for the welfare of the organized forces, which leaves them in poor health.

President Kiir said the top commanders have been diverting the funds and food meant for the army for their personal use.

“Starting from General Gabriel Jok going down to the Division Commanders of all units I am not happy with you all. The health of the organized forces is not good because you are not feeding them and not giving them their money,” Kiir said yesterday.

The Commander-in-Chief of all the organized forces was addressing the army speaking during the award of medals and ribbons to the members of the former SPLM/A High Command and the current Chief of Defense Forces of the SSPDF.

President Kiir said some of the foodstuffs allotted to the organized forces is being diverted to the market by the division commanders.

“The food is being brought but instead of being hoarded in the store up the food is taken to market and these things are not done by the organized forces but you the commanders,” Kiir said.

“After I have finished with the implementation process (of peace agreement) I will come back to you the commanders starting from Gabriel Jok, his deputies and the division commanders,” he added.

At the ceremony, President Kiir awarded SPLM/A members of the former Political-Military High Command, former Leadership Council and Chief of the South Sudan Peoples Defense Forces medals and ribbons to honor their heroic roles and sacrifices during the country’s long walk to freedom.

The awardees were Vice President Dr. James Wani Igga, Presidential advisor for Military affairs Gen. Daniel Awet Akot, the Minister of Defense, Hon. Engineer Kuol Manyang Juuk, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Nhial Deng Nhial, the Governor of Fangak State Gen. John Kong Nyuon and the Chief of Defense Forces, Gen. Gabriel Jok Riak.

President Kiir urged the army to be vigilant and stick to their constitutional mandate of protecting the national integrity and work for the development of the country.

He also called on South Sudanese to keep the spirit of unity and advised the organized forces to protect civilians and their properties.

The vice President Dr. James Wani Igga on behalf of the awardees, appreciated the President of the Republic of South Sudan, army officers and all comrades present for acknowledging the role they played in the liberation struggle.

Dr. Igga said discipline, commitment, hard work and loyalty to the nation will lead to a secure and prosperous country.
