European Union Partners' Quarter Review Meeting In Wau

Wau 06, November 2019 (GURTONG)- The three days meeting brought together European Union’s partners and beneficiaries from Greater Bahr el Ghazal Region to discuss ways forward of the Organization and as a platform for coordination, lesson learning, synergy building, sharing, capacity building, sharing of best practices.

The Quarterly Review Meeting was built on this and anchored on the understanding that the EU founded food security programme is developed to contribute to unified common goal which is “to contribute to improved food and nutrition security of targeted households in South Sudan,”

The Implementing partners involved in the meetings are, World Concern, Hope Agency for Relief and Development, Norwegian People Aid, Norwegian Refugee Council, World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization mainly operating in Aweil, Wau, Warrap and Lakes states.

The focuses of these organizations are mainly in the areas of food security improvement, policy planning, programming and decision making as well as increasing smallholders’ agricultural production in selected project areas and maintenance capacity for rural feeder roads network.

It is focus on increasing social cohesion among the local population, absorptive capacity in the face of climate change and conflict disaster management.

In an inclusive interview with European Union Deputy Head of Delegation in South Sudan, Elisabetta Bellcocchi said this meeting also made as a specific objective to promote continuity and building
coherence among all implementing partners who are engaged in different aspects of the programme in Greater Bahr el Ghazal.

“The Quarterly Review Meeting is not only limited to food security but also covers education, peace building, health and governance using the territorial approach to promote synergies and interconnectivity among actors, “she said.

“Over a year, EU has provided more than US$ 250 million towards rural development and resilience building in South Sudan. The investments have mainly focused on improving food security and nutrition for rural households with the aims to innovate home income,” she added.

Meanwhile Gogrial State Governor Victor Atem Atem described the meeting as a very important forum for sharing experiences, knowledge and variety of ideas for successful implementation of the entire EU supported projects.

“This is not the first time to receive this great support from European Union, but EU has been supporting many agricultural and rural development programmes in greater Warrap state and other parts of South Sudan, aiming at ensuring food security and poverty alleviation across the Country,” said Atem Atem.

“Agricultural led development has been identified by African Heads of States and governments as a key to restoration of food and nutrition security and rural development on the African continent. This is in line with the United Nations Millennium Development Goal number one,” said Atem.

Atem said the goal of this 12 Quarterly Review Meeting is to interrogate the quality of programs, the programs that could enable people to create their own strong inter and intra-sectorial linkage inclusive of quality partnerships.
