The Geopolitical Competition By IGAD Is Worrisome

"Decides that until his final status is determined at the upcoming Ordinary Summit of the IGAD Assembly, the SPLM – IO Leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny shall be allowed to stay in a country of his choice in the region". As a result, the country of his choice became Khartoum, Sudan;... but he's t free.

Following the looming deadline for the formation of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity on 12 November 2019, a lot more of basic requirements haven't been done, including the release of Dr. Riek Machar to be free and join the Government. But the geopolitical competition by IGAD member states is another headache so far. It's politics, stupid!

Paragraph 10 of the 33 Extra-ordinary Summit of IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government held in Addis Ababa on 12 September 2018, passed the following resolution:

"Decides that until his final status is determined at the upcoming Ordinary Summit of the IGAD Assembly, the SPLM – IO Leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny shall be allowed to stay in a country of his choice in the region".

As a result, the country of his choice became Khartoum, Sudan, until date; but he's technically still under house arrest. He's not a free man.

Unfortunately, the IGAD Heads of State and Government could not convene Ordinary Summit until date, allegedly because of competition over who will be the next chair of IGAD Assembly between Republic of Kenya and Republic of Sudan. Why would South Sudanese become victims of what they don't know? An old man or woman or any person deep down in the Towns and villages across South Sudan do not know or concern about IGAD politics.

In conclusion, the today's on-going meeting in Entebbe, Uganda, hosted by His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and attended by His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit of Republic of South Sudan, His Excellency General Abdel Fattah Al Buran, Chairman of the Sovereign Council of Sudan and His Excellency Dr. Riek Machar, First Vice President designate of the Republic of South Sudan, should addressed the outstanding issues facing the formation of the unity government.

The three members of the IGAD Assembly should also speed up the convening of Ordinary Summit of IGAD Heads of State and Government to decide on Riek final status and elect the new chair of IGAD.
