Death Toll Reaches 14 In Fighting Between Army and Civilians in Tonj State

“Disarmament is a state government’s priority that no one should resist. The population needs to be disarmed and free the civilians from the threat of small arms in the hands of civilians in the state”, he added.

Wau 2, December 2019 (GURTONG) - At least fourteen people have been killed in fighting between government forces and civilians in Tonj State. Nine others are also reported injured following the last Friday fighting.

According to Tonj State Information Minister the fighting involved the army and civilians in Gaapagok County over disarmament process.

William Wol Mayom Bol told Gurtong from Tonj Capital on Monday that the cause of the clashes between civilians and the SSPDF soldiers who were conducting disarmament remains tense and hostile to the law.

“Two civilians and 12 soldiers of the SSPDF were killed in the clashes. Nine people were injured, five soldiers and four civilians. The soldiers were part of a disarmament force in the area but the cause of the clashes has not been determined,” he said.

Wol said that a high level committee, comprising the state security advisor and national security team, has been dispatched to the area to investigate the matter.

The minister also lastly acknowledged that despite the death toll, the situation is currently under control.
