Abyei Is Wailing In Pain And No One Want To Hear

"It is a strategy to pull a trigger at the time when Juba and Khartoum are in bed with each mediating for the other...The United Nations Interim force in the area, a peacekeeping body responsible for protection of lives and properties needs to re-evaluate its performance and adjust accordingly."

It has been experiencing these recurring attacks since late 2019. The recent incident in which innocent lives and properties were lost, following an attack on Kolom area by the nomadic and armed members of neibouring Misseriya community, was not just horrific and a disturbing act but premeditated to discourage the return and settlement of the inhabitants in their ancestral homes and origins.

It is a strategy to pull a trigger at the time when Juba and Khartoum are in bed with each mediating for the other.

Like in the past, Juba watched the news, so were Khartoum, despite installation of the new leadership. None of them came out to comment on the incident, not even a message of condolence to members of the attack community. People are left to figure it out on their own.

Filling the gap, the united and patriotic South Sudanese poured messages of solidarity, with every commentator on social media condemning the act and declaring readiness to respond, a clear invocation of nationalism and gave signals that people are united and see Abyei as part and parcel of the republic of South Sudan by all accounts and definitions.

The United Nations Interim force in the area, a peacekeeping body responsible for protection of lives and properties needs to re-evaluate its performance and adjust accordingly.

The area of Abyei as a defined and delineated territory by the court of arbitration is the area for which the United Nations Security Council established the mission mandated to manage it until such time the impasse is resolved.

Since there is no presence of the police and the military, the mission needs to stand up to its mandate by reinforcing its presence in the hot spot areas, those adjacent to where attacks are launched.

My family and I extend the affected family members our heartfelt condolences.
