AMDISS Condemns Murder Of Journalist In Tonj, South Sudan

"Urges the national government and the state authorities to protect journalists across South Sudan without prejudice. Reminds the government and security organs of their responsibility to provide security to and uphold the freedom of expression in the country."

PRESS STATEMENT
Juba, Friday 3rd July 2020, Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) condemns the killing of Marko Agei Makoor, a journalist for Door FM in Tonj on Wednesday 1st of July 2020.

It was reported that the 27-year-old Marko Agei Makoor Chol was shot in a road ambush by unknown gunmen while traveling to Tonj town. The motive for killing this young journalist remains a mystery. The state authorities confirmed that the journalist was riding a motorcycle when he got killed near his home village.

AMDISS is concerned by this unfortunate tragic act of terror which claimed the life of this journalist who was tirelessly doing his noble duty of keeping the communities informed and updated about the progress of peace implementation in the country.

The administration of AMDISS conveys its heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family of late Marko Agei and putting together the following plea:

1. Calls on the state authorities to immediately conduct a thorough investigation into the murder of the young-promising journalist Marko Agei.

2. Appeals to security organs to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice and rule of law is served.

3. Urges the national government and the state authorities to protect journalists across South Sudan without prejudice.

4. Reminds the government and security organs of their responsibility to provide security to and uphold the freedom of expression in the country.
