OCHA: Humanitarian Update Southern Sudan

Highlights & Key responsibilities

• More than 391,000 people were displaced by conflict in 2009.

• The number of hungry people in Southern Sudan is projected to quadruple in 2010 due to conflict and drought.

• WFP is propositioning 50,000 metric tons of food ahead of the rainy season.

Inter-tribal fighting intensified in mid-December 2009 and continued into January and February 2010. From mid December to 15 February, more than 36 inter-tribal fighting incidents were reported in Southern Sudan with 513 people reported killed in the process.

The Southern Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (SSRRC) and inter-agency assessment teams estimate that 36,200 people have been displaced by conflict during the last two months. The worst attacks occurred along the border areas between Warrap and Unity states as well as in Jonglei State.
