Call for Proposals

The Nile Institute of Strategic Policy and Development Studies (NISPDS)

I. Background
The Nile Institute of Strategic Policy and Development Studies (NISPDS), in short, the Nile Institute, a national Think Tank, is undertaking a program of research into Land and Property Rights issues in Southern Sudan, in collaboration with ARD, a USAID affiliate specializing on land issues.

The researches are intended to provide evidence-based findings that are quantitative and qualitative in nature, to assist the GOSS Land Commission in developing land policy and laws for Southern Sudan. A scoping Paper has been developed to guide researchers in the development of research proposals.

Competent researchers are therefore requested to submit research proposals on any one of the following thematic areas:

1. Customary Tenure and Traditional authority in Southern Sudan
2. Jurisdiction of GOSS, state, county and customary authorities over land administration, planning and allocation.
3. Urban land management and Informal settlements
4. Resettlement of Returnees and Restitution of land and property rights
5. Women’s rights to access land and property
6. Conflicts over Resources among rural communities in Southern Sudan.

The proposal text should be no more than five pages in length, single-spaced, using Word font 12 type with 1” margins. The structure of the proposal should follow the following format: introduction, problem statement (including a literature review), objectives, research methods, data analysis, and study area. The research should be based on a case study approach.

II. Eligibility
1. Applicants must be Southern Sudanese nationals with good experience or any other person with experience of having conducted research in Southern Sudan.
2. Being capable of leading a team of researchers.
3. Women researchers are encouraged to apply.

III. Application Submission
The deadline for submission of proposals is Monday, April 26, 2010; and must be submitted electronically at the email addresses: kcripgalla@yahoo.com; sforojalla@yahoo.co.uk 
 
IV. Duration: It is envisaged that the entire research should be carried out in May and June 2010.

V. Budget
The amount to be allocated for each research theme shall vary according to the demands of specific research theme. Maximum amount to be awarded shall be USD15,000 per proposal.
