VOA Sudan Project is Looking for Journalists
The Voice of America is looking for journalists to work on its new Sudan Project. The Sudan Project will broadcast a 30-minute radio program and maintain a web page with news, information and features for and about southern Sudan, in English. These are contracted positions, to work 5 days per week, Monday-Friday. Some of the positions are located in Sudan, and some in Washington DC. All positions will report to the Sudan Project Coordinator, under the overall supervision of the Chief of English Radio, English Division, VOA. LOCATED IN WASHINGTON DC:
Managing Editor:
Will be knowledgeable about issues, events and developments affecting Sudan and the greater Horn of Africa region, preferably having covered the region for a major news organization; will be a seasoned journalist/correspondent with superior writing and editing skills; will file a variety of news, feature and analysis reports; will conduct daily news meetings with the team; discuss story ideas and make assignments; ensure coverage of breaking news and feature topics; edit all reports and scripts for radio and the web ensuring they conform to VOA standards and guidelines; monitor broadcasts and web page to ensure reports are balanced and comprehensive; ensure assignments are completed and deadlines met; work successfully as part of a team.
Host/Reporter (two people will be selected under this category):
Will be intimately familiar with issues and events in Sudan and the larger Horn of Africa region, preferably having lived or worked in southern Sudan and/or the region; attend and participate in daily news meetings; pro-actively contribute story ideas; report stories daily for the radio broadcast and web page; prepare broadcast script for 30-minute radio show; host daily live air show in a manner appealing to audiences in southern Sudan; anchor live discussion segments; ensure that content and style conform to VOA production and professional standards; work successfully as part of a team.
Producer:
Will be knowledgeable about issues, events and developments affecting Sudan and the greater Horn of Africa region; attend and participate in daily news meetings; take in, edit and package daily stringer feeds from overseas; edit audio to ensure high sound quality and appropriate story length; prepare lineups of stories and time them in preparation for 30-minute air show; direct the air show in the studio, ensuring professional standards are met; ensure air show is lively and flowing through appropriate use of bridges, and production techniques; manage live phone-ins from stringers and newsmakers for use in air shows; prepare broadcast logs of all programs aired; work successfully as part of a team.
LOCATED IN SUDAN:
Editor/Stringer Coordinator:
Based in Juba, will be intimately familiar with issues and events in Sudan and the larger Horn of Africa region, preferably having lived or worked in southern Sudan and/or the region; will file a variety of news, feature and analysis reports; will conduct regular news discussions with stringers, to determine coverage and make stringer assignments; guide stringers to use appropriate sources and materials to create fresh and relevant reports; edit stringer reports and scripts ensuring they conform to VOA standards and guidelines; ensure assignments are completed and deadlines met; advise Sudan Project staff of any technical or editorial issues and/or problems that need solving to ensure optimal news flow; work successfully as part of a team.
Stringers (five people will be selected under this category in Sudan, others may be selected in other key locations):
Will be intimately familiar with issues and events in southern Sudan, in Sudan as a whole, and in the greater Horn of Africa region, having worked as a journalist with a professional news organization or received extensive training; will identify new developments in his/her assigned reporting region, and pitch stories on a regular basis to the Editor/Stringer Coordinator based in Juba; will report on a wide variety of political, economic, humanitarian, and other news and feature developments in his/her area, preparing breaking news and longer background reports as needed; will speak with a wide variety of sources to get a broad understanding of events, conducting interviews with government officials, businesspeople, educators, scientists, humanitarian and development officers, ordinary citizens, etc; will advise team of the significance of events, and reaction to events, so as to inform VOA's audiences; ensure assignments are completed on time and meet all deadlines.
