RUMBEK, 15 August 2010 (Gurtong) – Winny Costa Mapuor Machiek was declared the best student at Khartoum Diplomatic Secondary School (KDS) this week in provisional results announced by school authorities.

She scored grades A+ and 1B, beating a field of several students at the high- cost Khartoum-based school.

“Khartoum University’s Faculty of Medicine is my first choice. I want to study medicine so that I can help the poor members of the community who are unable to access quality healthcare”, said a beaming Mapuor.

“There are many diseases in South Sudan yet there are no doctors and health facilities to address that. I always hear people dying from disease in South Sudan and I will make sure that I first go and work in South Sudan upon my graduation”, she added.

She said her favourite subjects were sciences and admitted that she had some difficulty in History.

Mapuor was in full praise of her family who supported her throughout her studies at Khartoum Diplomatic Secondary School (KDS).

“My gratitude goes to my beloved mother Rose Costa Mapuor for having supported my education as well as my brothers who offered me emotional and spiritual support”, she said.

When not engrossed in her books, Mapuor loves cooking for her family and enjoys making friends.

Her jovial mother congratulated her for her exemplary performance, adding that the high school fees did not ‘go to waste’.

“My effort to educate my daughter in such a high – cost school has paid off and I will support her until she attains the highest degree in education”, she said.

The school headmaster Johnson Nyeko said the school does not select the best students but it is through the hard work of both teachers and students that they excel in examinations.

“The Sudanese and the international parents whose children study here are very proud of this achievement and we going to do even better. As we always say: we do not compete in Sudan, we compete internationally”, he said.

Khartoum Diplomatic School is owned by the British and it is one of the most expensive private schools in Sudan.
