JUBA, 29 May 2012 [Gurtong] – Official reports indicate that the Monday aerial bombardment also led to massive destruction of nearby villages.
The Spokesperson of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) Colonel Philip Aguer said the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) have continued to bomb Wrguet, Majak Woi and Kiirkou in Northern Bar el Ghazal State since last Friday.
“More than ten people have been killed as of today and a lot of villages have been destroyed. We feel that the attacks by SAF are meant to jeopardise the Addis Ababa peace talks that start on Tuesday”, he said.
He added that the SAF is currently using Mairem in Southern airport in Southern Kordofan as a military base where gunships and bombers are being used in the new wave of attacks against South Sudan.
“Yesterday twelve bombs were released in Wrguet targeting SPLA positions but were repulsed by the SPLA forces. We also have information that in the last three days Sudan has deployed militia groups near Unity State with an aim of attacking Mayom and Abienmon”, said Colonel Aguer.
The South Sudanese government’s Spokesperson Dr Barnaba Marial told the press that South Sudan is committed to peace and wants the Addis Ababa talks to proceed as scheduled despite Sudan’s aggression.
