Doctor Dies After Police Beating in Torit

A Kenyan medical doctor has died in Juba Teaching Hospital after police beating in Torit.

TORIT, 07 August 2012 [Gurtong] – The doctor identified as Joseph Matu was a running a medical clinic in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State.

Witnesses said that the late was tortured while under police custody after he resisted arrest on allegations of selling counterfeit drugs.

The doctor was taken to Torit Civil hospital for medical attention but was later transferred to Juba for specialised treatment.

He died while undergoing treatment in Juba.

According to the Kenyan community in Torit, the body of the late will be flown to Nairobi where the date and place of burial will be determined.

Kenyans in Torit said they have witnessed such mishandling by the South Sudan Police on several occasions and called on the government to investigate the officers involved.
