RUMBEK, 07 August 2012 [Gurtong] – It is alleged by a family that their 15-year-old girl eloped with one Laat Makur Agot last month and was impregnated but the man denied responsibility.
His action is said to have angered the girl’s family leading to the confrontation.
The girl’s family filed a court case at Rumbek Town Court under Chief Dhelbeny Makuer Gol but when the hearing started yesterday, Laat still denied taking responsibility.
Police intervened by firing bullets in the air to disperse the fighting group.
Loud gunshots could be heard inside Rumbek residential areas of Malual-Akan and Malakia.
Rumbek Central County Executive Mangar Chol Maguong told Gurtong that some individuals including students have been arrested following the incident.
“We have arrested those involved in the dispute and the county will impose the law accordingly,” said Mangar.
The chaos erupted at the time when the National Schools Sports Competitions are going on in the state capital.
However, the State Information and Communication Minister Charles Badiri Mayen said the competitions were not disrupted by the chaos.
“These shootings have not affected Inter-school competitions. This is a family case which is unexpected but police have done their best to control it. Nobody was harmed,” said Badiri.
