RUMBEK, 10 August 2012 [Gurtong] – In July, a total of 24 people were killed and several others got serious injuries during the inter-communal clashes between Waat and Ayiel communities.

The County Commissioner Isaac Mayom Malek said the suspects were arrested after investigations by security operatives in collaboration with community members.

“The joint operation for suspects was carried out by Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) intelligence personnel, police and other security agents,” said Mayom.

Commissioner Mayom said the suspects will be arraigned in court to face murder charges.

“We have set up a special court which is mandated to examine the cases," said Mayom.

According to Mayom, all the suspects are detained in military prison in Lang-Cok, North of Rumbek.

“Cueibet County is calm.  The security situation is back to normal as we have enough forces to deal with any threat,” the commissioner said.

The State Governor Chol Tong Mayay called upon Cueibet County residents to sustain the prevailing peace following communal clashes.

“I need people of Cueibet to stay in peace and break the cycles of violence. Help bring all those people suspected to have had a hand in Cueibet violence to book,” said Tong.

Tong added that only justice will determine those responsible for the clashes.
