Sudan in April 2010 would hold general elections that are a major milestone in the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement. In accordance with its mandate the UN mission in Sudan is tasked with the support of the electoral process but the responsibility for planning, organizing, and conducting these elections rests with the National Elections Commission (NEC).

JUBA, 4 August (Gurtong) – The Central Equatoria State State Legislative Assembly re-opened yesterday for its last session before the forthcoming general elections in Sudan.

A January 2005 peace deal ended Africa's longest civil war in south Sudan and
paved the way for power and wealth sharing and democratic transformation. The
SPLM leadership formed a coalition government in Khartoum.
