CAIRO, 13 December 2013-  In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Abyei intellectuals in US, United Kingdom and other western, Middle East and African countries called for an immediate reconsideration and decision towards a final fate on referendum outcome in which the Dinka Ngok chiefdoms overwhelmingly voted to join South Sudan.

“Abyei Community in the US appreciated your support for the Abyei referendum and once again appeals for your support to recognize Abyei referendum results. Abyei community in Diaspora and back home recognized that your contribution was a key to success of Abyei,” the statement partly reads.

They urged Presidents Omar al-Bashir and Salva Kiir Mayardit, the international community’s especially African Union to endorse Abyei referendum results.

“The intention of this letter is to urge the United States Congress, the United States Senate, African Union, European Union and International Community to remember that the longer the issue of Abyei remains unresolved, the greater the potential for violence to arise in the area,”  the letter warned.

Despite showing their resolve in the referendum, the Abyei community feels uncertain since the international community and the two presidents have remained silent on the outcome of the referendum.
