President Salva Kiir Visits Rumbek, Lakes State

RUMBEK, Oct 11, 2007 (GURTONG) - The First Vice President of the Republic of Sudan, President of the government of Southern Sudan, Chairman of the SPLM and a commander in-chief for the SPLA, H.E. 1st Lt. General Salva Kiir Mayardit arrived at town of Rumbek yesterday Wednesday.

Thousand of people in Lakes State stood guard to welcome Kiir at Rumbek airport. Lakes State governor Lt.Gen Daniel Awet Akot together with his cabinet and honorable members of Lakes State assembly including eight counties commissioners plus all SPLM secretariat for Lakes state were present during the welcoming.

About ten thousand students starting from primary schools of Lakes including Rumbek senior secondary school were present holding different placards slogan that focus on democracy, justice, and education which are the strong tools to changes Sudan into complete freedom for Sudan. Some of the placards had slogans saying “SPLM is the source of freedom” which made Kiir smile upon reading on arrival at Rumbek airport.

FVP and GOSS President Salva Kiir held a close door meeting with Lakes executive whereby his was briefed on the security status in Rumbek and the resident floods that had affected Lakes state citizens and displaced many others.

Kiir met the members of Lakes parliament at Southern Sudan Logistic (SSL) whereby a meeting was held between the executive and Assembly members behind closed doors.

According to Lakes State minister for Information and Communication Adak Costa Mapuor said that “Kiir visited with the aim of visiting floods affected areas." The recent impeachment of Lakes State Minister of Finance, Trade and Industry Philip Marol Mading on 21 September, is clearly a case that should be handle by the constitution law because there are such law that can regulated such a matters.

Nevertheless, Salva Kiir officially opened the office of Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Rumbek. The SPLM Lakes state secretary Samuel Mathiang Ker awarded Salva Kiir with “LAKES STATE PEACE CUP”. Soon after the FVP and GOSS President Salva Kiir meet with Lakes spiritual leaders at Akon Buoi garden and also award with black stick of Dinka Agar traditional believe.

Kiir shorted he visit from two days to one day, after spending five hours in Rumbek and flew to Yirol before proceeding to Juba, the capital of Southern Sudan.
