TORIT, 20 June 2014 [Gurtong]– The suspension comes into effect from June 11, 2014.This followed a letter of impeachment from Municipal Councilors to the governor. The Municipal Councilors launched their impeachment accusing the embattled Mayor over alleged malpractices. The governor Lobong revealed he received the impeachment letter from the Councilors on Wednesday stating reasons demanding for the removal of the Mayor.
He told journalists that in his turn, he constituted an independent committee led by the current state Peace Commissioner Deputy Chairperson Hon. John Otwor Savio. The committee formed by the governor is expected to report its findings within seven days to the office of the governor.
According to the governor, the committee has been tasked to investigate issues which might have calumniated to the impeachment process by the Torit Municipal Councilors.
He added that the Councilors in their memo raised that the Mayor has been working alone, isolating them, a move the councilors described as serious attempt towards collective development efforts of the Municipal.
The Mayor reportedly faced criticism from the Torit community in relation to the recent demolition of the Torit Omoliha market in addition to roads’ widening within the municipality.
Members from the National Security Service, criminal investigation department (CID) member, municipal legislative council and Anti-Corruption Commission have been co-opted into the Committee, officials revealed.
In October last year, the governor Lobong appointed Stephen Osfaldo Loboli and Marko Lokitoe Lokuta as Torit Municipal Council Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively.
