Council of Ministers Applauds Kiir For Signing Peace Agreement

The Council of Ministers in its regular meeting last Friday applauded the initiative by President Salva Kiir Mayardit in signing the Peace Agreement urging the citizens to support the peace deal.

JUBA 31 August 2015 [Gurtong]-  Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth, Minister of Information and Broadcasting also the government’s Spokesperson told journalists after the meeting on Friday that the Council of Ministers deliberated on the peace agreement which was signed by the President.

Makuei said the meeting was chaired by the Vice President, James Wani Igga and attended by the cabinet ministers.
The cabinet extended calls to the citizens to support President Kiir in the implementation of the signed Peace agreement of last Wednesday.

“The council of ministers applauded the bold decision taken by his excellency the President by signing the peace agreement so that the people of South Sudan can leave in peace and stop all these killings and fighting” he said.

“We call upon the people of South Sudan to stand behind the President and support him so that we can move towards the implementation of this agreement especially at the time when he [President]  has also gone further and declared a permanent cease fire” he lamented.

“And that ceasefire is from our side and we expected the rebels to declare their ceasefire after which the committee for permanent ceasefire will be set up to ensure the implementation of the agreement,” Makuei added.

Makuei expressed his optimism that if the peace agreement is implemented the country will improve its crippled economy citing reduction of the price of the dollar in the market as well as commodities.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on August 26th signed the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Plus compromise agreement ending the nearly 21 months of conflict.

The document was tabled to the two warring parties on 24th of June setting 17th August, 2015 as the dateline to bring the 20 months conflict to an end.

Dr. Riek Machar Teny, Pagan Amum Okiech, the leader of the Former Political Detainees and other stakeholders signed the agreement on August 17th.
