House Speaker Igga to “Safeguard” Democracy and CPA

In a related development, Cdr. Lieutenant General James Wani Igga, the newly elected Speaker of South Sudan Parliament, took his place on the platform and led the official opening of the First Session of South Sudan Assembly. In his keynote address, Wani Igga said, his election as Speaker for the Transitional Legislative Assembly of South Sudan is regarded as a huge responsibility vested on him by the people of the South.

He said he would faithfully under take this responsibility together with the members of South Sudan Assembly in order to fulfil his duties towards the peoples of South Sudan and contribute to the democratic transformation in the country (Sudan), to participate in development of the South and safeguard the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (the CPA).

He added that the election of Tor Deng Mawyen from the National Congress Party (NCP) to the leadership of South Sudan Legislative Assembly shows the SPLM strong will to partnership in the Government of National Unity (GoNU).

The Second session of South Sudan Assembly was convened in Juba on Friday, September 30, 2005. Members of the Assembly are expected to pass the Interim Constitution of South Sudan that will pave the way for the formation of the GoSS and the 10 States’ governments in the South.

During the second day of the convention of Southern States’ Legislative Assembly, the governors of the ten Southern States took oath before Salva Kiir Mayardit and Dr. Riak Machar, the Vice President of the GoSS and before the Chief Justice of South Sudan.

Kiir Mayardit instructed the new governors of the South to select efficient employees in the South in order to help the GoSS combat any phenomenon of corruption. The President of the South urged the governors to be transparent in handling public funds and asked them to focus great attention on development in order to sustain the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (the CPA)!
