Kiir Mayardit Meets High-level Delegation from Western Bahr El-Ghazal

Khartoum, Saturday August 20, 2005

The First Vice President of the Republic of Sudan and President of the Government of South Sudan Lt. General Salva Kiir Mayardit, today received in his office at the Republican Palace in Khartoum a high level delegation from Western Bahr El-Ghazal State (WBGS) comprising of community leaders, politicians, intellectuals, women, and representatives of civil society organizations (CSOs) belonging to WBGS.

Speaking to Gurtong at the Coordination Office of WBGS in Khartoum, Mr. Michael Gebatin Okello, the President of Fertit Community Forum (FCF) who headed the delegation representing the communities of WBGS said, the sole objective of the visit was to pay commiseration to the SPLM/A Leadership following the tragic death of Dr. John Garang De Mabior, who died in a Ugandan Presidential chopper on Saturday, July 30, 2005.

Their purpose was also to salute and congratulate the SPLM/A for bringing about the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed by the Government of Sudan (GoS) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) on Sunday, January 9, 2005 in the Kenya Capital Nairobi, and most importantly, the delegation paid a courtesy call to congratulate the new leadership of the SPLM/A in the person of the incumbent First Vice President of the Republic of Sudan and President of the Government of South Sudan, Lt. General Salva Kiir Mayardit, who succeeded Dr. John Garang as Chairman and C-in-Chief of the SPLM/A .

Michael Gebatin said, “the delegation was quite representative in that it took into consideration all ethnic communities of WBGS namely, the Fertit, that represents its 35 tribes or ethnic groups, the Luo (popularly known as Jur Chol) and the well known Dinka Marialbai (now Known as Dinka Marial Wau)”.

He said the visit to the First Vice President, came from the good will of the three communities who met in Khartoum and selected a high-level delegation to pay a visit of solidarity to the SPLM/A leadership. They also paid condolences to Madam Rebecca Nyandeng the widow of late Dr. Garang and her children.

This correspondent also met with Mr. Nichola Khalifa Bringi who arrived from Canada on the same day and joined the delegation to the Republican Palace. On behalf of the communities of WBGS living in the “DIASPORA”, he offered condolences to the SPLM/A leadership and the Madam Rebecca Nyandeng, the wife of the fallen Hero of Peace.

Mr. Nichola Bringi confirmed that Lt. General Salva Kiir personally received written condolences and congratulatory message to the SPLM/A Leadership for the two separate occasions. He said Lt. Gen. Salva Kiir assured him and the entire delegation that the message for Rebecca and her children would be delivered safely to them.

Nichola said, he has been in Canada for quite a long time and that, now peace is here, it is of a paramount importance that all the sons and daughters of the South come back home to develop their motherland, South Sudan. He is the first from amongst the Western Bahr-El-Ghazalians in the Diaspora to arrive home to help back up the implementation of the CPA and development of the South using the expertise he acquired abroad!

Speaking to Gurtong in Takamul (1) Hajj Yousif in Khartoum North where he is hosted by Southern Community from WBGS on Saturday, Mr. Nichola Khalifa said, “the sons and daughters of WBGS in the Diaspora are wiling to come back and put all bricks in order and embark on vigorous developmental process of their region and of the South as a whole”.
