Council of Ministers Welcomed First Vice President Lt. Gen. Salva Kiir

The Council of Ministers welcome today the new First Vice President of the Republic of Sudan, Lieutenant General Salva Kiir Mayardit, who was sworn in on Thursday, August 11, 2005 as First Vice President of the Republic of Sudan and President of the Government of South Sudan.

During the session the President, Field Marshal Omer Hassan Ahmed Al-Bashir, renewed the government’s commitment to the implementation of the CPA, which he said, “The Government will implement the CPA in full, article by article."

The President said that, “we Sudanese people are capable of solving our problems and overcoming any problems that we face”! He cited the recent tragic event following the un-timely death of Dr. John Garang De Mabior, the former First Vice President of the Republic of Sudan and the President of the South who died in a Ugandan Presidential Helicopter crash on Saturday, July 30, 2005. “Whatever happened" said President Bashir, "was a test for Sudanese people, government and citizens to measure our capabilities as a nation.”

President Al-Bashir, on behalf of the Government and the entire people of the Sudan, welcomed Lieutenant General Salva Kiir Mayardit to lead the Sudanese people to towards peace and unity of the Sudan, and confirmed that the VP will find support from all the ministers and at all levels of the government!

On his part, Kiir Mayardit, thanked President Al-Bashir and the members of the Council of Ministers for the warm welcome accorded him!

Salva Kiir said Dr. John Garang as been called by the “Creator”, but that his legacy will continue and will always remain alive.

The new First Vice President said, “ I assure you I will implement the CPA that was signed by Dr. Garang on the 9th January in Nairobi, Kenya this year!" He said this was the only way we could do justice and honor to "our Hero of Peace, Dr. John Garang De Mabior!" The SPLM and the government, he said "will go for the cause of peace, which they begun with Late Dr. John Garang". He stated that, they (SPLM and the Government) would compensate the Sudanese people for what they lost during the last fifty years of struggle for a better Sudan.

Salva Kiir thanked the SPLM/A leadership for the confidence they have in electing him as Chairman and Cdr-in-Chief of the SPLM/A and for having himd endorsed by the President as First Vice President of the Republic of Sudan and President of the Government of South Sudan
