UN Under-Secretary General For Field Support Visits UNISFA

The United Nations Under-Secretary General (USG) for Field Support, Mr. Atul Khare, on Tuesday arrived Abyei at the Headquarters of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) for a two-day working visit.

ABYEI 09 December  2015 [Gurtong]- According to UNISFA Spokesman, Daniel Adekera, Mr. Khare was received by UNISFA’s Officer Head of Mission and Force Commander, Lieutenant General Birhanu Jula Gelalcha, and was briefed on security, political, operational as well as mission support matters.

USG Khare applauded UNISFA leadership for its efforts and commitment in carrying out the mission’s mandate despite political and security challenges, and highlighted that his visit aims to strengthen the coordination and support between Headquarters and the mission.

The USG commended the mission for launching Community Protection Committees (CPCs).

USG Khare called for greater involvement and more commitment from the governments of the Sudan and South Sudan in maintaining peace and security in the Abyei Area.

The officer in charge (OiC) Head of Mission and Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Birhanu Gelalcha, thanked the USG for operational and logistic support to the mission and for addressing staff’s welfare concerns.

USG Khare addressed UNISFA staff at a town-hall meeting, and planted a ‘peace tree’ at the missions’ headquarters before proceeding to Khartoum en route to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
