JUBA, 11 January 2016 [Gurtong]- South Sudan Democratic Movement (SSDM)/Cobra faction emerged in mid-2013 to differentiate Yau Yau’s second rebellion from the wider South Sudan Democratic Movement/Army (SSDM/A).

Antipas Nyok Kucha, SPLM Secretary for Political Affairs and Mobilization told the press at the SPLM General Secretariat on Monday that the SPLM has welcomed the decision made by General David Yau Yau and his entire leadership of Cobra faction and South Sudan Democratic Movement.

“They have all joined the SPLM as the mother party. For the last few years they have been in separate organization as Cobra faction and SSDM,” Nyok said during press the press briefing.
Nyok said, comrade David Yau Yau is now a full member of SPLM together with all Political and military leaders that were with him in the cobra faction and they declared their full intention joining the SPLM under the leadership of President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Nyok on behalf of the SPLM secretariat leadership appealed to all the SPLM members, country wide particularly to David Yau Yau and his colleagues to join hands so that the party stands to achieve its objective.

General David Yau Yau on his part applauds his entire membership of the cobra faction and SSDM in rejoining the ruling party.

“We are no longer calling ourselves or calling us SSDM/cobra faction. We are fully SPLM Party and we are SPLA especially the military part. And of course it is something extraordinary to witness such exciting day of joining the SPLM,” General David Yau Yau said.

He said his Cobra Factions/SSDM has not left anyone behind and are fully ready to participate and contribute in building the nation whichever way necessary.

General David Yau Yau first rebelled during the 2010 General elections after failing to get a seat as represent of Gumuruk–Boma constituency in Pibor County at the Jonglei State Assembly.

He later claimed his main motive of rebellion was underdevelopment and marginalization of Pibor communities as well as lack of local power sharing at the State level in Jonglei.

In 2011, President Kiir issued his presidential amnesty pardoning David Yau Yau with his military commander and later sent them for training in Nyancigak and Mapel military college.

David Yau Yau re-defected in 2012 where his force fought for two years before 2014 April peace agreement that made him to be Chief administrator for greater Pibor Administrative Area now dissolved in the current 28 States.

However it is not yet clear what prompted David Yau Yau and his cobra faction/SSDM to rejoin the SPLM party just a day after the party held its first extraordinary convention that forged a party reunification since the 2013 brawl.

A report from the Sudan Human Security Baseline Assessment (HSBA) of the Small Arms Survey said that Yau Yau’s initial rebellion may have been more about internal Murle politics than electoral grievances.
