New statement by the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs on the NGO & RRC Bills

9th Feb 2016

A STATEMENT ON THE NGO AND RRC BILLS by Christos Stylianides, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management

The increasingly high needs and worsening of the humanitarian situation in South Sudan require unhindered assistance so that the organisations such as NGOs that directly get lifesaving aid to the population can do their remarkable work.

This is why I share the concerns of the humanitarian community and aid stakeholders in South Sudan regarding the adoption of the NGO Bill by the National Legislative Assembly, and its likely immediate and grave consequences on the delivery of much needed humanitarian assistance in the country.

I strongly urge all parties and authorities to allow free and unhindered humanitarian assistance. I note that this bill should be reviewed by the Transitional Government of National Unity and submitted to a process of public consultation to ensure its compliance with international best practices. I urge that President Kiir will use his final say on this Bill to act for the benefit of his citizens.

The delivery of vital assistance to the most vulnerable must be allowed to continue.
