JUBA, 15 February 2016 [Gurtong] - The Governor for Southern Liech State arrived Leer town, the headquarters of the newly established State on Saturday.

Governor Stephen Taker Riek said he was warmly welcomed by the State population and the SPLA forces in the area.

Stephen has been in Juba since his appointment.

“I have arrived to Leer town, the headquarters of Southern Liech State. First of all I would like to inform everybody that our leader Salva Kiir Mayardit has instructed the 28 Governors to work for peace among the communities. So our main task is peace in South Sudan. After peace the President wants us to bring development to our local population,” Stephen stated.

Like any other State governments of the recent created 28 States Stephen said his government will receive the pledged 20 tractors from the President’s office which will soon arrive Leer Town before the end of February.

“The government will invest in agriculture. I will make sure that the tractors arrive here within this February. I was supposed to have come today with the State Minister for Agriculture but told him to remain behind and facilitate for us the transportation of the tractors to Southern Liech State immediately,” he clarified.

State officials have acknowledged that the 21-month old conflict has destroyed the physical infrastructure in the States and that a committed effort is needed to reconstruct the region during this peace period.

Governor Stephen appreciated the SPLA forces in Leer town for protecting the South Sudan’s constitution and government.

Southern Liech is comprised of Mayendit, Panyijar and Leer Counties of the then Unity State with Leer Town as State headquarters. Southern Liech is situated in the far South of the former Unity State.
