JMEC Welcomes Appointment Of First Vice President

The office of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) has welcomed President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s decree for the appointment of Dr. Riek Machar Teny as the first Vice President of South Sudan.

JUBA, 16 February 2016 [Gurtong] - In a statement released last Friday, JMEC Deputy Chairperson Mr. François Lounceny Fall, welcomed the appointment by President Salva Kiir and commended the government for taking the step, saying it is necessary for the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity, TGoNU.

Mr. François urged the Parties to hasten planning for the phased and sequenced implementation of transitional security arrangements for Juba, in order to accelerate the relocation of forces from the capital and begin the movement of Dr. Machar’s guard.

He further urged the Parties to intensify their efforts to form a complete Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) as soon as possible.

Kiir on 11th February 2016 issued a Republican order No. 60 for the appointment of Dr. Riek as first vice president in line with the Agreement signed in August last year.

“In exercise of the powers conferred upon me under clause 524, Chapter 1 on the Agreement of the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (ARCISS), I Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan do hereby issue this Republican decree for appointment of Dr. Riek Machar Teny as the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan with effect from 11th February 2016” reads the decree.

On his part, Dr. Riek Machar welcomed his appointment by President Kiir calling it ‘a step in the right direction.

"I was surprised by my appointment but I believe it's a step in the right direction” Riek Machar said.

“I hope within 3 weeks, I should be able to take my position and work to implement the Peace Agreement and rebuild South Sudan again" he added.
