JUBA, 23 March 2016 [Gurtong]- In a presidential decree read out on the national television, Kiir did not give any explanation for firing his close ally whom he has kept in the cabinet since 2005 holding several positions in the government.

The move comes a day following several calls for his resignation by Political parties and members of the SPLM former detainees faction after he uttered comments referring that the Abyei region was not part of South Sudan.

Also, recently a human rights report on South Sudan revealed that a letter signed by the Foreigner Affairs Minister, Dr Marial labeled Dr Luka Biong Deng as a citizen from Sudan who was working as a Director for Centre for Peace and Development (CDP) in Juba University as a non-national.

Biong, an Abei born academic, fled the country in October last year after he was threatened by security agents over a symposium he organised on the controversial creation of the 28 new States.

Kiir’s decree did not name any replacement for Dr Marial’s position.
