JMEC CALLS ON SOUTH SUDANESE PARTIES TO
URGENTLY DEMONSTRATE FLEXIBILITY TO
IMPLEMENT PEACE AGREEMENT

For Immediate Release
19 April 2016

JUBA: The JMEC Chairperson, Mr. Festus G. Mogae, Former President of the Republic of Botswana, called today on the Parties to the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan to demonstrate the utmost flexibility and spirit of compromise to ensure the Agreement is implemented. “The Agreement is at risk. Having come so close to the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity, all Parties must ensure that the spirit of reconciliation, compromise and dialogue embodied by the Agreement should be protected,” said the JMEC Chairperson.

While expressing his deep disappointment that the First Vice President-designate and Leader of the SPLM/A (In Opposition) failed to travel to Juba on the chartered aircraft provided by international partners on 18 and 19 April, the Chairperson also called on the Government of the Republic of South Sudan to ensure its full cooperation in ensuring the return arrangements for the First Vice President-designate are amicably agreed. The Chairperson expressed his hope that the flight of the First Vice President-designate could be rescheduled within days, without further conditions, to ensure the timely formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity.

Given the gravity of the situation, the Chairperson announced his intention to convene an extraordinary meeting of JMEC, for Thursday, 21 April, at 10am.
