UNMISS Donates Sports Equipments to Football Clubs in Aweil

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) last Saturday, donated 30 footballs and 9 sets of Uniforms to local football clubs in Aweil, to help youth promote peaceful coexistence, unity and sports development in the region.

AWEIL, May 9, 2017 [GURTONG] - The event held at Aweil Freedom square was attended by at least 10,000 spectators. A number of young boys and girls eagerly welcomed the initiative and promised to abide by aiming higher in sports.

Two friendly matches between girl’s football teams and boy’s teams were held in celebrations of the event. In the girl’s match, Mathiang Girls Fc played Hai-salam girls FC which ended 6-1 in favour of Mathiang FC. In the boys El Zirah beat Panameth 5: 0.

Awards of different categories were handed to all the teams that participated in the friendly matches.

Atakly Hailu the UNMISS head of Office, said his office is pleased to be a peace partner alongside the government of South Sudan. “We are obligated to support the peace implementation through activities such as sports that unite people.” Said Atakly.

Atakly added that the donation is to help promote youth activities to the next level in holding peace as an important virtue in their respective communities.

William Machok Mou, the president of Aweil Local Football Association (ALFA), appealed for continuous support  in the future.  

Hon. James Wieu Mayuol Anguei welcomed the donation from UNMISS saying the gifts will make a great impact in youth’s sports development.
