WAU, August 09, 2018 [Gurtong] - President Salva Kiir, Dr. Riek Machar and other political figures inked the agreement in Khartoum on Sunday.

In a statement Antonio Guterres UN chief issued on Tuesday, the move is an important step in the revitalization of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.

“Recalling earlier agreements signed between the parties, the Secretary-General urged all parties to work in good faith and demonstrate their commitment to fully implement and finalize the
revitalized agreement as soon as possible,” the statement reads.

Mr Guterress reiterated the continued commitment of the United Nations to hold up the achievement of a fair, inclusive and sustainable peace agreement for the people of South Sudan.

The statement was also echoed by the head of UN Mission in South Sudan, David Shearer, saying the deal is “a big step forward” in terms of bringing about peace in the country.

“It is a starting point which I think a lot of us didn’t think we would see perhaps two months ago,” he said.

He said what remains is a full implementation of the agreement.
