"one of the studies in Tharjath (Block 5A) shows Lead (Pb) pollution in surface water exceeds the World Health Organization's drinking water allowable limit of 0.01 mg/l by 410% and Chromium (Cr) concentration allowable limit in drinking water by 26%."

Oil Pollution In Drinking Water Very High In South Sudan

Oil producing areas have suffered from oil pollution since wartime. Yet less attention has been paid to this catastrophe by both the government and the general public since 2005 when we took the responsibility.

Scientific studies of this phenomenon have been dismissed as baseless by the oil companies. The government has in most cases backed up the companies' claim.

Recently, I examined available documented evidence of the impacts since the 1990s, delving into historical records and literature to ascertain whether the documented evidence scientifically links the current oil pollution to the environmental, health and social impacts in the oil producing areas and what the gaps in the literature are. As you would expect, majority of the studies clearly reveal alarming impacts yet authorities have continued to take no action.

For example, one of the studies in Tharjath (Block 5A) shows Lead (Pb) pollution in surface water exceeds the World Health Organization's drinking water allowable limit of 0.01 mg/l by 410% and Chromium (Cr) concentration allowable limit in drinking water by 26%.

Recent move by the Petroleum Ministry to launch an environmental audit of the oil operations is commendable but it must be carried out by a reputable firm through a competitive international bidding, overseen by the Ministry responsible for the environmental matters, instead of being overseen by the Ministry of Petroleum as is the case now.
