Popular Consultation Bill Passed

Great! But, Dr Biong, we are still waiting for the passing of democratic media bills by Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly!

Dear All,

Popular Consultation Bill Passed with No Changes

I am delighted to inform you that the National Legislature has passed this evening the Popular Consultation Bill without changes. The Assembly will be on recess for three months and it can be called back if needed, particularly to amend national elections law, penal code, criminal procedures and other laws that need to be amended. By passing these laws we will now enter into another challenging phase of implementing them.

This is great news, Dr. Biong. We are all very happy for this historical; achievement by the SPLM/GoSS leaders.

But we are still waiting for the passing of democratic media laws by the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly. It seems to be one thing to demand democracy and fairness from the North and another thing when it comes to the South applying the same.

Those media laws, now in SSLA, need to be sufficiently democratic without undue ministerial control and undue restrictions on information from private and public business in the public interest. And we really are running out time as election date approaches.
