Education Statistics For Southern Sudan 2009

Introduction 

“We cherish education for all our people equally and aim to provide a lifelong education for all children and adults ofSouthern Sudan, an education that is relevant and based on the needs of the people, to enable them to be responsibleand productive citizens.”

 GoSS MOEST vision The Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST)’s main aim is toensure that all individuals have access to a primary school education regardless of age, special needs and gender. 

These goals reflect the Government’s commitment to obtain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of ensuringthat by 2015 all boys and girls will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling, as well as eliminating allgender disparities in primary and secondary school by the same year.

To this end the ministry is focusing on developing the sector of basic education through 1) constructing classroomsand 2) building the capacity of teachers. Also prioritized is community awareness of the importance of girls’education.

 A great number of adults and children have not had the opportunity to go to school due to the decades of civil war.As a strategy in ensuring the achievement of the goals stated above, as well as eliminating illiteracy, MoEST haschosen to construct both a formal and an alternative education system.

The Southern Sudanese education systemtherefore has both a formal education ladder and an alternative education system. The formal education ladder isbased on an 8-4-4 system, i.e., eight years of formal primary education, four years of secondary education and fouryears of higher (post-secondary) and tertiary education.
