AU Communique: Consultative Meeting on the Sudan

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 8 May 2010

1. At the initiative of the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Mr. Jean Ping, a consultative meeting on the Sudan took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 8 May 2010. This meeting took place in follow-up to the decision adopted by the 207th meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC), held at the level of Heads of State and Government in Abuja (Nigeria) on 29 October 2009, which endorsed the report and recommendations of the AU High-Level Panel on Darfur (AUPD) and established the AU High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) on Sudan.

2. In addition to the Chairperson of the Commission, members of the AUHIP and the Commissioner for Peace and Security for the AU, the meeting was attended by IGAD (Ethiopia, as Chair, and the Secretariat), the United Nations, the League of Arab States, the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the European Union, neighboring countries of the Sudan (namely, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Libya and Uganda), the Special Envoys or their representatives of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Finland, Japan, Norway, Sweden, as well as representatives of Qatar, Italy (Chair of the IGAD Partners Forum) and the Assessment and Evaluation Commission (AEC). Burundi (Chair of the PSC for the month of May 2010) and Malawi, as Chair of the AU, also participated in the meeting. The AU-UN Joint Chief Mediator, the Joint Special Representative for UNAMID and the Special Representative of the Secretary General for the United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS) were also in attendance.
