The Launching Of Countdown to Southern Sudan Referendum

The Sudan’s Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed on 9th January 2005 in the Kenyan capital Nairobi between the Government of Sudan (GOS) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) to end the longest running conflict in Africa.

The Sudan has just concluded its first democratic elections in twenty four years as one of the requirements stipulated in the CPA. This is to be followed by a referendum in January 9th, 2011 during which the people of Southern Sudan shall exercise their right to self determination by way of referendum to determine their future status in accordance with the provisions stipulated in the CPA, the Interim Constitution of the Sudan, the Interim Constitution of Southern Sudan and the Southern Sudan Referendum Act.
