South Sudanese Students Receive Funding

South Sudanese students in East Africa and the Diaspora can now smile all the way to their classes after their education funds were released by the Government of Southern Sudan.

JUBA, 10 June (Gurtong) – The Undersecretary for Higher and Tertiary Education in the Government of Southern Sudan’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Atem Kuir told Gurtong in his office last week that the money would soon be channeled to the various banks in the respective countries where South Sudanese students are studying.

“From next week we will send the money through the Bank of Southern Sudan to banks in Uganda and Kenya. Students have their own bank accounts in these countries from where they will receive the money”, Kuir said.

The estimated number of South Sudanese students in Uganda is over 2, 000 with over 1,000 in Kenya as well as over 3,000 in the Diaspora.

In the past years, money sent to the students has been misappropriated leading to a massive demonstration in Uganda last year.

Kuir called for a serious follow up of the case where 3.5 million United States Dollars was embezzled.

“We are also forming teams that will go and verify whether the money has reached the students as intended or not. The team will include the Southern Sudan Anti Corruption Commission which will ensure the money is transferred as designed without any hitches”, he said.

Just as our interview progressed, the Undersecretary received a telephone call from the Ugandan education coordinator who informed him that the cash had been well-received and will be disbursed to the respective students.

However, Kuir said, starting this year, no student will be offered any financial support by the Government of Southern Sudan following a new initiative to encourage South Sudanese students to study in local universities.

“The Ministry will however continue supporting students who enrolled between 2006 and 2009 until they complete their studies”, he said.

South Sudanese universities and the government have also started cutting down on some areas of support including transport, in a bid to encourage parents to independently support their children’s education.

To get education in other countries is the promotion of those countries' economies. The money students pay as school fees benefits the people of those countries. Our people qualify to teach any subject at any level, secondary schools, universities schools but there is little heart that people have, education is not good in South Sudan as well as Sudan generaly.

Education is the same in Africa as elsewhere in the world. Studying in western world's tall buildings doesn't make people wise and knowledgeable. Even though a person who has no talence of wisdom and knowledge studies in the very tall building that reaches the skies in western world countries the wise and knowledgeable person may be better than him. when teach a sheep in USA until it finishes PHD holder, primary eight leaver student born wise, who studies in South Sudan may be better than it.

The matter of studying in the neighbouring countries was created by the corrupts leaders who take their siblings to study there by paying alot of money their fathers corrupted in Southern Sudan. This also goes to the common men who have cows or other properties, they sell such properties to get money for their sons and duaghters to go to the neighbouring countries to study there. What these common men have in their, they think that why the corrupt leaders take their siblings to educate in abroad educate in Sudan is not good. The corrupts are wasting their wealths to take their block minded siblings to study in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda,Austrualia, USA, UK and other countries in the world but we who do education Sudan they cann't rule us, because their fathers are leaders now and they also study in the abroad. Except some of them who will have good qualities of a leader may get leadership.

It good to encourage South Sudanese students to study in local universities to learn more about South Sudan.
